Guinea Pigs are native to South America and are kept for food throughout Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. The story goes that guinea pigs got their name because they came into Europe via the South American country Guiana and that they were sold for a guinea in England.

Queen Elizabeth I had a guinea pig as a pet which no doubt contributed to the popularity.
